Already There, Pal. It’s Called A Human Rights Violation

[Phillippe Marchand, comment]  I just want to note that when I was commenting on Joey’s post, I didn’t refer to the “death to Jews” phrase, mostly because it might be impossible at this point to prove if someone said that, or, more importantly, who did.

What could be more easily proven or attributed is written words, and on that ground, some people argued even the title “Israel Apartheid Week” is hateful. I think we both agree that this is a political opinion, and not incitation to violence towards a specific group.

However people (for one reason or another) might take words such as this personally and be insulted. I don’t think that the fact someone feels insulted by that title, by itself, is grounds for prosecution, else hate crime laws would obviously be going too far.

The rest.

  1. A bit off topic, but not much. B’nai Brith has filed a CHRC complaint against a Pro-Palestinian B.C. based web site for such “hateful” messages as “Israel is an apartheid state”

Quote from the article: “There are a number of calumnies that need to be exposed,” Mr. Abrams, a Victoria businessman, said in an interview. “The idea that Israel has no right to exist or that Israel is an apartheid state,” he cited as examples.

I support Israel, but attempting to censor political speech is offensive.
