Careful. Quoting Is No Defence

May 26, 2008 · No Comments

[Nigel Hannaford] Now, if I — as an unreconstructed white guy, and a Christian to boot — made these assertions based on no more than my own observations, I would probably be up to my knees in paperwork from somebody’s human rights commission. Pointing out the lack of human rights in Islamic states, you see, is the kind of seditious talk that human rights commissions in Canada hate.

However, I’m actually just quoting the gist of what Tarek Fatah says in his new book, Chasing a Mirage: the Tragic Illusion of an Islamic State.

vs.

[Tizona] In December 2007, the Canadian Islamic Congress (CIC) filed Human Rights Commission complaints against Steyn and the magazine in three different jurisdictions, charging them with “exposing Muslims to hatred and contempt” for, among other things, accurately quoting a Norwegian imam who boasted that Muslims were breeding “like mosquitoes.”

Media To Tiger Woods: It Doesn’t Count Unless You’re A Big Mouth

May 26, 2008 · No Comments

[The Nation, May 26, 2008] For all his cultural capital, Woods has refused to take stands on issues that should hit close to home, such as restricted golf courses, or even when the Golf Channel’s Kelly Tilghman suggested young PGA players “lynch him in a back alley” in a “joke” about how they might overcome his dominance. Tiger has largely maintained the tight-lipped silence of a Benedictine monk.

After the lynching comment, ESPN’s Scoop Jackson became so frustrated with this disciplined quietude he wrote, “Because of who he is, Tiger Woods has the power to make people listen. Not just hear his words–but embrace what he has to say…. It’s a stand he needs to take because people who change the world eventually have to take stands. Whether strong or silent, good or evil, they take stands not to prove their beliefs, but to rectify a situation or condition.”

vs.

[Tiger Woods, on the Tiger Woods Foundation website] I can proudly say more than 10 million young people have been touched by the Tiger Woods Foundation. Through character development programs, scholarships, grants, junior golf teams, and the Tiger Woods Learning Center, the Foundation is helping young people reach their goals.

Please take a look around our website and learn more about our programs and events, the young people we’ve worked with and the sponsors who make it all possible. Thanks for visiting. I hope you’ll join us as we work to make a real difference for millions of kids

We’ll Pass On The Big Mac

May 26, 2008 · No Comments

More from the Human Rights/Fast Food file:

The British Columbia Human Rights Tribunal has ruled that Beena Datt is exempt from the rules of hygiene because she has a skin condition which is irritated by soap and water. In order to protect her rights, the commission ruled that even though hand washing is the law in B.C., McDonald’s Restaurants can’t require Datt to wash her hands when she starts a shift, after going to the toilet, or whenever an alarm sounds reminding employees to wash up.

As the grand finale to this three-ring circus, McDonalds was ordered to pay Datt $50,000. In case you think this is an isolated incident, the Alberta Human Rights Commission has declared it a human right to work in a restaurant while infected with hepatitis. Everyone feel better now?

It’s Not About Better Pay, It’s About Human Rights

May 26, 2008 · No Comments

Politics, sports, education, fast food. You name it, the magic words appear. Think it’s a trend?

The events of the past months have been trying. But we are prepared to move forward, together now with Burger King, toward a future of full respect for the human rights of workers in the Florida tomato fields.

Australia Gets Ready To Screw Itself

May 26, 2008 · No Comments

[Frank Brennan] Now is the time for all Australian jurisdictions to be considering the benefits of a bill of rights, whether it be constitutional or statutory, whether it include open textured rights such as freedom, equal protection, and due process or be confined to more restricted rights, and whether judges be required to interpret future statutes according to the usual principles of statutory interpretation or so far as possible in a way compatible with the defined rights. Law Week provides the opportunity for all citizens to engage in dialogue about the pros and cons of a bill of rights.

Thanks For Narrowing It Down

The former president [Carter] also believes a solution to the problems in Iraq is possible and said a deadline must be set for withdrawal of US and British troops.

“I am not sure if it should be one year or five years. The essence of it is to let the world know and particularly Iraqis that by the end of this period we will be out.”

UK Ministers To Euro Human Rights Court: Save Us From Ourselves

May 26, 2008 · No Comments

But MPs believe they could bring a challenge against the release of some details under the European Convention on Human Rights, which is incorporated in British law under the Human Rights Act.

The move could delay publication by months or even years, and could result in a bizarre situation where British MPs are appealing to a European court to seek protection from freedom of information laws they passed themselves.
