Human Rights Is Big Bucks

The 77-page report, released publicly this week, contains a laundry list of short-term and long-term recommendations from a nine-person advisory committee, chaired by Winnipeg real estate mogul Arni Thorsteinson. Some of them include having an autonomous board, an extensive and ongoing marketing campaign, a significant online presence, a strong service culture and developing a policy to respond to criticism.

Construction of the $265-million museum could start before the end of the year, with a grand opening in 2010 or 2011. More than $4 million in donations came in from four Crown corporations last week, leaving the museum less than $13 million short of its $105-million private fundraising goal.

Okay, But Does It Have HBO?

Scott ruled that the women’s constitutional rights would not be violated if they were moved to a multi-level prison such as Grand Valley Institution in Kitchener.

“There are no significant differences between [Grand Valley] and [McNeill House],” Scott wrote in his 14-page decision.

He said that the women did not offer any “real evidence” that they’ll suffer psychological harm if they are transferred.

Three of the women are serving life sentences for murdering their husbands. Olsen is serving life for killing her six-month-old daughter.

In a report released in 2004, the Canadian Human Rights Commission urged Corrections to consider building new medium- and minimum-security prisons for women.

The commission concluded “women prisoners continue to face systemic human rights problems in the federal correctional system.”

National Post: What’s With All The Boobs?

One of the visitors went further, suggesting that some human-rights commissions had become dumping grounds for political hacks without the skills to make it in truly merit-based jobs (my language, not his). He had the air of a man whose dream was being stifled by bad execution.

The editorial board jumped on this. To wit: If the people staffing these commissions are boobs, why would we trust them with the responsibility to police our most basic democratic right — the right to express oneself on matters of public interest?
